The city has been buzzing of late, and while most have had Melbourne Cup fever, I on the other hand have been focused on a rare treat that has graced itself in our fair city … that is, The fashion world of Jean Paul Gaultier : from the sidewalk to the catwalk exhibition currently being hosted at the National Gallery of Victoria NGV.
Chronicling his life and influences as a youngster in the suburbs of Paris to the rise of his couture brand, the exhibition is a wealth of mixed media showcasing the extraordinary talents of this design icon. Always unique and thriving on the unconventional it highlights his reach from the street to the catwalk, to the stage and in film … everything about his work screams theatre and is truly lavish.
As I passed through each room I was in awe. I always enjoyed his work but to be faced with them in the flesh has given me a new appreciation of the intricate and detailed nature of his creations. With added notations highlighting the painstaking hours dedicated to the creation of these incredible garments it was truly inspiring. As Melbourne is the only city in the Southern Hemisphere showcasing his work in this exhibition, it was lovely to see an added Australian flavour to the display. There were several nods to his diverse range of Australian muses who include Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman as well as Kylie Minogue and Andreja Pejic. A nice touch indeed.
Without doubt the exhibition is an incredible acknowledgement to the diverse and idiosyncratic career of Gaultier and one visit is simply not enough. I for one will be definitely going back for another dose of French couture. Til then I can revisit through the images I snapped below, and just bear in mind it is only just a hint of what was on offer. Enjoy!
