I wandered into the Melbourne Town Hall the other day to gather a program for the International Comedy Festival which has just begun here in merry Melbourne town, only to discover the Town Hall’s newest exhibition, Jet Set Melbourne. And what an unexpected treat it was.
Jet Set Melbourne is a sleek nod to a bygone era when the airways were seen as a thing of glamour and luxury. It’s a relatively small, but clever snapshot of mixed media and other paraphernalia that highlights the evolution of the airways here in Melbourne from humble beginnings leading up to the development of our very own international airport at Tullamarine back in 1970. It’s a nostalgic trip to say the least, and a delightful one at that. I am so glad I had the opportunity to stumble across it, even if it was by accident. It was definitely worth the diversion!
